Vehicle description

Model history:

The Golf GTI was the first factory-tuned everyday car in the Volkswagen range. When it was unveiled at the IAA in September 1975, hardly anyone suspected that this two-door hatchback would become a major success. The letters GTI stood for "Gran Turismo Injection," and it was powered by a 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine equipped with a mechanical fuel injection system (K-Jetronic from Bosch). Visually, the GTI caused a stir due to its black widening and trim elements, the red-rimmed radiator grille and the spoiler lip at the front, among other things - contoured sports seats, sports steering wheel, golf ball gear knob and a tachometer and oil pressure gauge ensured a sporty appearance in the interior. From 1982, a 1.8-liter engine with 112 hp replaced the 1.6-liter, which had 110 hp.

General information about the vehicle:

A 1983 VW Golf 1 GTI can now be purchased in this auction. This GTI was first registered in Germany with the VIN WVWZZ172DW630648 and according to the seller it has only had 4 owners to date. A checkbook is not available and the history of the 1-series GTI can no longer be fully traced due to missing documents. However, it is clear that this Golf has already undergone a complete restoration and among other things, the paint, interior, technology and underbody have been revised. Worth mentioning is a valid TÜV until July 2023 and the existing H-registration as well as a Dekra valuation, which gave this GTI the grade 2.

Exterior color/paint/body:

Before this GTI was completely painted, all windows were removed according to the seller and all existing rust was removed. After the complete black paint job a new windshield with green wedge was installed. Accordingly, this 1 Series GTI is now visually clean and the add-on parts are in good shape. Front and rear bumper show no parking bumps and an accident-free condition in the current possession can be excluded by the seller. For a detailed overview of the condition of the vehicle, we recommend that you take a look at the extensive photo series.

Exterior Rims/Brakes/Chassis:

According to the seller, the tires are still in 70-90% of their new condition - in the area of the brakes, he estimates the condition at 70-90% as well. The rims are chrome/gold wheels in a multi-spoke design, 2 of which have light curb scratches. On the chassis side, according to the seller, there are no inconsistencies to list.

Interior:

For €7,000, the complete seating and headliner were removed and replaced by a master craftsman: The sports seats with leather side bolsters now feature the classic GTI tartan pattern and, like the headliner, are in perfect condition. The equipment elements in the interior of the VW Golf 1 GTI include a multifunction display, the 4-spoke sports steering wheel, the Golfball gear knob and the additional instruments in this case, as well as a sunroof and an accessory radio. For a detailed overview of the interior and equipment options of this VW, please refer to the other photos.

Mileage:

After consultation with the seller, this VW Golf 1 GTI is said to have run approximately 82,050 kilometers - a traceability of the total mileage is not possible due to the lack of history. All gauges in the instrument cluster are fully functional.

Engine:

A water-cooled 1.8-liter inline four-cylinder engine with mechanical fuel injection provides 112 horsepower in this GTI from 1983 - power is delivered to the road via front-wheel drive through a 5-speed manual transmission. A Sprint sports exhaust provides good sound. In June 2022, the GTI underwent a final service.

Underbody:

According to the seller, the underbody of this Golf 1 was completely uncovered for 2,500€ and then carefully primed and painted. In addition, the cavities got a sealant with wax. Due to its low curb weight combined with spontaneous throttle response and compact dimensions, a 1 GTI provides plenty of driving pleasure - the first GTI became a best seller for VW and paved the way for later so-called "hot hatches". This 1 Series GTI offered here for auction benefits from its extensive overhaul, which has been carried out in various areas of the vehicle and ensures that the GTI is well equipped for future years.
