Model history
The Mercedes-Benz W 111 was a model of the Mercedes-Benz tail fin series, also known among enthusiasts as the "large (tail) fin", in contrast to the W 110 model series. The W 111 replaced the large pontoon models of the W 180 model series in 1959 and provided the technical basis for the Mercedes models until the end of the 1960s. The W 111 was basically replaced by the W 108 in 1965, with the 230 S being the only saloon that continued to be produced alongside the W 110 and W 108/109 models from 1965 to 1968. The 230 S model dispensed with the elaborate injection system with the twin-piston pump and two triple distributors. It achieved the additional output of 10 hp compared to the otherwise largely identical carburetor model 220 S with an increase in displacement to 2.3 liters.
