Vehicle description

Daimler Motor Company emerged from a german-English agreement on the sale of Daimler engines and the use of patent rights to Gottlieb Daimler's designs in Great Britain. From 1896, the company also acted as a producer: a wide variety of vehicles were produced. A special car was the SP 250 sports car presented in 1959, which had a plastic body and was powered by a 2.5-liter V8 engine. At the front there were disc brakes and the rear was adorned with striking fins. The vehicle reached a top speed of almost 200 km/h and was built in an edition of about 2,500 copies. After the takeover of the company by Jaguar, the production of the SP 250 was finally discontinued in 1964.

Now a Daimler SP 250 from the year of construction 1961 can be purchased, which was first delivered in the USA and was imported by the current owner in 1980 from the USA to Germany. Following the import of the 2-seater roadster, a restoration took place in Germany. In total, only 2 holders are known, who called the SP 250 their own. Although the history of the Daimler can no longer be fully traced, there are various invoices and documents available that can approximate the history of the roadster. The last TÜV ran until May 2022, whether the so-called matching numbers are given, the current owner can not say with certainty. This vehicle is offered due to the very good history, good technical condition and good condition of the interior at Kickdown. An SP250 is too bad not to restore it and bring it back to the road. The owner can no longer pursue this longing for reasons of time and therefore wants a buyer who appreciates the car and returns it to its origin.

Unfortunately, due to an accident, the front of the Daimler SP 250 was partially damaged by a reversing car, which can be viewed in detail on the telling photo gallery. This shows that the GRP body at the front has broken off and cracked in some places. Actually, the rest of the condition of the body is quite neatly preserved, as restoration work also took place in terms of body technology and the paint of the Daimler was completely renewed in red in 1981. The black folding top is preserved in a damage-free condition.

Vredestein tyres – which, according to the seller, have to be renewed due to their age – are mounted on spoke wheels. According to the current owner, the brakes still have 70-90% of their new condition, no deficits can be identified in the area of the chassis.

The entire interior of the Daimler SP 250 has been completely spared from the accident: the black leather bucket seats, the footwell carpet, the dashboard and the door panels are just as much in good condition as the leather steering wheel and the gear knob. All displays, switches, levers and other instruments seem to work in the interior of the roadster, even the folding top can be easily opened and closed again. There is still a black tarpaulin, which is preserved undamaged.

Two Chrome-mounted Smiths round instruments sit in the driver's direct field of vision: A mileage of 27,530 miles can be read from the 5-digit speedometer. The total mileage of the Daimler SP 250 can no longer be traced after consultation with the seller, but some documents and invoices are available for partial comprehensibility of the history of the roadster.

Propulsion is provided by a 2.5-liter V8 OHV engine, which transmits 140 hp to the rear axle by means of a 4-speed manual transmission. The seller notes that he had participated in various classic car rallies with this roadster for over 25 years until the accident through no fault of his own and that the car always worked well. The last maintenance work took place in September 2021.

There is no corrosion on the underbody and the overall condition of the underside of this roadster can be described as extremely good. An idiosyncratic design, the small number of units and the 2.5-liter Daimler V8 make the SP 250 a sporty exotic, in which participation in every rally is guaranteed. After this Daimler SP 250, which is offered here for auction, has been brought back into shape, the roadster will definitely thank its future owner with every single kilometer of driving.
