Technik: Toyota GT86 und Subaru BRZ sind viersitzige Sportcoupés, welche in Kooperation zwischen den japanischen Automobilherstellern Subaru und Toyota entstanden und von Subaru hergestellt werden. Der GT86 ist das Resultat einer Kooperation von Toyota und Fuji Heavy Industries, zu der auch Subaru gehört. Die Toyota Motor Corporation hält eine Minderheitsbeteiligung von 16,5 % an der Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd. Subaru hatte sich im Februar 2006 zur Entwicklung des Subaru BRZ entschlossen und zwei Prototypen gebaut. Zwei Monate später fragte Toyota bei Subaru an, ob sie Interesse an der Herstellung eines Sportcoupés hätten und es kam eine Absichtserklärung zustande. Bis April 2008 entwickelte Subaru das Projekt BRZ ohne Beteiligung von Toyota technisch fertig. So entstanden zwei weitere Prototypen zur finalen technischen Abnahme. Im April 2008 entschloss sich Toyota dann das Projekt als GT86 unter der Marke Toyota in ihrem Produktportfolio zu platzieren. Die technische Entwicklung des Fahrzeuges erfolgte bis dahin ausschließlich von Subaru. Die zwischen 2008 und 2011 gezeigten Toyota-GT86-Prototypen sind allesamt von Subaru in den eigenen Entwicklungsabteilungen bzw. bei externen Karosseriebauunternehmen in Italien entstanden und wurden Toyota zur Verfügung gestellt. Das Design wurde von Subaru und Toyota gemeinsam entwickelt. Die AS-1-Plattform, auf der das Auto basiert, ist wie der Rest des Fahrzeuges komplett von Subaru entwickelt bzw. stammt aus der vorhandenen Subaru-Modellpalette. Der Motor (FA20D) wurde ebenfalls von Subaru entwickelt und verfügt über die kombinierte Saugrohr- und Direkteinspritzanlage „D-4S“ welche von Toyota stammt. Alle Varianten tragen den Weltherstellercode JF1 (JF1 = Subaru Co.) in der Fahrzeugidentnummer.
