Model history
Mercedes-Benz presented the W 113 model series at the Geneva Motor Show in 1963. The new convertible was to replace both the 190 SL and the 300 SL. The new SL marked the transition from the rounded shapes of its predecessors to a more functional style with smooth surfaces and plenty of usable space. In addition, extensive safety measures such as crumple zones were introduced for the first time in an SL. The optional, inwardly curved hardtop earned the W 113 the nickname Pagoda. In 1971, the Pagoda was replaced by the R 107.
