Vehicle description
The Alfa Romeo Montreal - named after the eponymous venue of the 1967 World's Fair, where the design study was first presented - is a sporty 2+2-seater produced by the Italians from 1970 to 1977. The coupé was the first production vehicle from Alfa Romeo to be equipped with an eight-cylinder engine, which came from the Tipo 33 racing sports car and was modified for road use. Also in terms of floor assembly and chassis, the Italians used the tried and tested, and resorted to the chassis of the Giulia GTV Coupé. Although costs could be saved in production, the Montreal was never able to establish itself in motorsport due to the rather simple chassis compared to the powerful engine. In road use, however, the coupé was able to impress with its good driving performance: the high-revving V8 engine with 200 hp in combination with the ZF five-speed transmission ensured sporty propulsion, and the top speed was a remarkable 224 km/h. But beyond technology, the Montreal impressed above all with its unique design from the pen of the then Bertone chief designer Marcello Gandini. Characteristic of the coupé are the lamellar headlight bezels and the side ventilation slots, which, in contrast to the design study designed for a mid-engine, serve to vent the cockpit. By the end of production in 1977, only around 3,900 vehicles had been produced.
This auction offers the opportunity to purchase an Alfa Romeo Montreal from 1975. The coupé with the vehicle identification number AR1427686 was registered in May 1975 on its first of a total of five vehicle owners. According to the seller, there is no history of the car, but he attests to the Alfa "Matching Numbers". The car has an H-approval, an additional valuation report is not available. The last general inspection took place only recently and is therefore not due again until May 2024. The coupé comes with a set of a total of two vehicle keys. The seller can rule out accidental damage in the current possession.
Even with Alfa Romeo, it doesn't always have to be red: "Verde medio" is what the Italians call the green exterior color in which the Montreal presents itself. According to the information, the paintwork has been completely renewed, which explains the excellent appearance of the coupé: There are no defects or damage around the body, and even smaller stone chips or traces of past parking bumps can be found in vain on the car. Unlike other Alfa models of the 70s, the Montreal was largely spared rust problems, and this example is also in a carefree condition.
The coupé runs on the original standard alloy wheels, which show an age-appropriate, but well-kept condition. The seller describes the fitted tyres as as new. There are no modifications or defects in the area of the body and chassis, and the brakes also fully fulfil their function, according to the information. The car is currently in accident-free condition.
The interior of the Montreal is lavishly equipped, where the well-kept impression continues: in addition to age-related signs of use, the interior is free of damage or defects. The seats covered with black imitation leather show no major signs of wear and have apparently always been treated with care. The panelled centre console and all toggle switches are also free of damage and look very well maintained. In addition to the electric windows, the built-in radio unit is an optional extra for the coupé.
Two large round instruments in the coupé provide information on all relevant vehicle data. The five-digit speedometer does not fully show the total mileage of the Montreal: 170,039km the car has actually driven, a history is not available to the seller. According to the information, the instruments work without restrictions.
The eight-cylinder engine with four overhead camshafts and mechanical Spica intake manifold injection (SPICA: Società Pompe Iniezione Cassani & Affini) came from the Alfa Romeo Tipo 33 used in racing. In this variant, the engine delivers 200 hp and has a displacement of 2593 cm³. Shifting in the coupé is done manually via the 5-speed ZF manual transmission. The vehicle received its last service in August 2021. On repairs carried out, the seller carries out the renewal of the clutch and the tires. There are no defects in the area of technology and engine, so that no further work is currently pending.
The sealed underbody is in an age-appropriate, good condition.
