Technik: Alle Käfer bis 1970 hatten vorn eine Kurbellenkerachse. Radaufhängung und Radführung übernehmen auf beiden Seiten zwei kurze Kurbellenker (Gelenkparallelogramme), die an Drehfederpaketen in den übereinander angeordneten Achsrohren angeklemmt sind. Die Federpakete bestehen aus sechs (je nach Quelle auch vier), später acht gebündelten Flachstahl-Federblättern. Am oberen Achsrohr ist das Lenkgetriebe verschraubt. Die zwischen 1970 und 1975 (Cabrio bis 1980) gebauten Modelle 1302 und 1303 haben eine MacPherson-Vorderachse mit Federbeinen, Querlenkern und radführendem Drehstab-Stabilisator. Bei den anderen Modellen blieb es bei den Kurbellenkern. Die Lenksäule ist bei diesen Modellen abgewinkelt, damit sie bei einem Aufprall weniger stark in den Innenraum eindringt. Die 03-Modelle bekamen 1974 statt der Rollen- eine Zahnstangenlenkung. Die Platz sparende Federbeinachse ermöglichte zusammen mit dem verlängerten Vorderwagen einen erheblich größeren Kofferraum, in den vier Getränkekisten passten. Das Reserverad lag beim 1302 und seinem Nachfolger 1303 unter dem vorderen Kofferraum. LG Tom
