Vehicle description
The 1970s began with a sensation at Alfa Romeo: the spectacular V8 sports coupé called Montreal appeared, the shape of which came from the hand of the Bertone draughtsman Marcello Gandini. The Montreal was the production-ready further development of a mid-engine car shown as early as 1967. With a light-alloy engine equipped with 4 overhead camshafts, the coupé driving on sporty alloy wheels was intended to appeal above all to buyers who were looking for an alternative to a Porsche or Ferrari. In the production period from 1970 to 1977, Alfa Romeo built a total of just under 4,000 copies of the Montreal model, which at the time cost 35,000 DM and thus as much as a Giulia, a Bertone coupé and a Spider together.
In this auction there is now the possibility to purchase an Alfa Romeo Montreal, which comes from the year of construction 1972. On 29.11.1972 the first registration of this sports coupé took place in France – more precisely in Paris. In 2008, the car with chassis number AR1427277 was sold to a collector in Hungary and came to Germany in 2013. In Germany, the Montreal had 2 owners in possession, so that a total of 5 previous owners come together, who were allowed to call the Alfa Romeo Montreal their own. Through various documents, the history of the vehicle can be traced back approximately. According to the seller, the so-called "matching numbers" are still given. Also worth mentioning is an existing report on Montreal. An H-license plate acceptance is already given, the TÜV will be renewed according to the current owner before the handover to the future owner.
Externally, in addition to the elegantly drawn silhouette, the paintwork in a metallic brown tone called "Luci del bosco" undoubtedly catches the eye of the beholder. A complete painting in the same original colour took place about 10 years ago. Except for slight signs of age and use, no defects can be removed from the body. In addition, the car has no recognizable corrosion points.
Tyres of the brand Vredestein – model Sprint Classic – are mounted in the dimension of 195/70 VR in the seller's specifications usable condition on very well preserved 14 inch "Millerighe" aluminum rims from Campagnolo. The chassis has a sporty design: it is equipped with a specially tuned lowering set, PU chassis bushings, Bilstein gas pressure dampers and adjustable swing arms on the suspension of the front axle. Brake pads and brake hoses are also designed for sporty driving.
The interior is just as elegant as the silhouette of this Alfa Romeo Montreal: matching the exterior color, brown fabric seats with the original upholstery material can be found inside the car, which give a good overall impression with the black-beige door panels and the black dashboard. A small hole can be seen in the cheek of the driver's seat and sometimes brittle plastic attachments can be found in the interior. Otherwise, the interior is to be attributed a well-kept state of preservation. In addition to the 3-spoke wooden steering wheel, the following features can be discovered as equipment elements on board this Alfa Romeo: green color glazing, electric windows and a contemporary Pioneer cassette radio. As far as is known, all electric helpers work.
The Jaeger instruments conceal the 5-digit speedometer, on which a mileage of 33,360 kilometers can be read. The exact total mileage of this Montreal can no longer be traced, according to the seller.
Under the bonnet that opens forward is the V8 engine with a displacement of 2.6 liters, which provides 200 hp by means of mechanical Spica injection. The gears are forwarded to the rear axle via a 5-speed manual transmission.
The underside of the car is sealed: improperly carried out work is apparently not present on the underbody. Due to the French first delivery of this car and the local regulations of yellowish light until the 1990s, the Montreal has yellow headlights. Factory installed on this car was the front spoiler. An accident in the current possession excludes the seller in its holding period.
Various invoice documents from recent years are available for the service history of the car. Furthermore, an original operating manual as well as a dealer directory from 1972 and the original jack for the vehicle exist. At an Alfa Romeo Classic specialist in Hamburg, a final service took place in 2021. Only recently, the "Scudetto" of the Montreal was renewed.
