Vehicle description

One of the icons of the Citroën brand is undoubtedly the SM designed by Robert Opron: under its extravagant shell hid some technical delicacies that are far from being taken for granted even today in many modern vehicles. Among other things, the SM has steering headlights, speed-dependent power steering and, of course, the legendary hydropneumatics. The SM had a 2.7-liter Maserati V6 engine, but there were also models that were converted to diesel engine technology by a certain Mr. Regenbeau: One reason for this was the oil crisis in 1973. According to research, almost 250 copies of a Regembeau conversion were produced.

A rare model of the so-called Regembeau conversion can now also be purchased in this auction: This Citroën SM with diesel engine offered here dates from the year of construction 1972, it was first registered in France on 22.09. of the same year. In 1981, the Citroën SM was converted by Regembeau on a mileage of 60,000 kilometers on behalf of customers. The car with the chassis number 00SC00402 has 2 previous owners in France, when it was imported to Germany it went into the third and immediately last possession of a senior physician. From 1981 to 2020, all invoices for the Regembeau diesel Citroën are available, so the history of the vehicle can be understood very well. In addition, 2 key sets are included with the SM, the shapely Citroën already has an H approval, the TÜV is still done again before the handover. Matching numbers as well as an expert opinion – which awarded the SM the condition grade 2 – are available.

In the color gold metallic shines the still in the first paint kept body of the Citroën SM, a "diesel" sticker at the rear reveals the conversion. The design of the SM seemed very avant-garde at the time, it still does today: The license plate and the steering headlights, which sit behind a glass pane, the Citroën-typical rear cover for the rear wheels, large glass surfaces on the side and also the glass dome at the rear speak for themselves. The rear end with the individual exhaust systems protruding outwards is also striking. It was not for nothing that the abbreviation SM was popularly translated as "Sa Majesté". According to the seller, there are just as few external defects to complain about as modifications to the exterior. An accident can also be ruled out.

Michelin tyres of size 205/70 are mounted on the original 15 inch Citroën rims. The tyres are in very good condition, the rims present themselves in used condition. There are no deficiencies in terms of brakes, the chassis is also TÜV-compliant, the hydropneumatics work perfectly.

Citroën-typical it goes on in the interior, so you can recognize a one-spoke leather steering wheel, idiosyncratically shaped seats that are almost reminiscent of shells and oval round instruments. The two front brown full leather seats already show some patina, but the leather is nowhere torn and the seat upholstery is still intact. The headliner is in acceptable condition, the door panels show no damage and the footwell carpet is stain-free. In addition, the dashboard has no cracking. The equipment of the SM includes: ambient lighting, electr. Power windows, power steering and a factory original radio (very rare), which is located in the center console. Modifications are not to be listed in the interior.

Just a glance at the cockpit shows the attention to detail of the Citroën designers: Jaeger instruments have any information ready. The car has run 141,200 kilometres so far: this mileage can be confirmed by a partially kept checkbook as well as by a rich collection of invoices, which have been meticulously archived in two folders. All switches, levers, displays and instruments in the interior of the Citroën are fully functional.

Instead of the original V6 Maserati engine with 2.7-liter displacement, this Regembeau conversion uses an in-line four-cylinder diesel engine with a displacement of 2.3 liters and 95 hp. Thus, according to the current owner, consumption of 8 liters per 100 kilometers is easily possible. An engine overhaul by the company Regembeau was carried out for the first time in 2010, another very extensive repair was also carried out again at the company Regembeau in 2016. Over the decades, the car was demonstrably given its regular care, so it is not surprising that a multiple of money was invested in the preservation of the rare Citroën, which is documented by well over 100 invoices and receipts. Thus, according to the seller, there is currently no pending work.

If you look at the underbody of the Citroën SM Regembeau conversion, you will find a very good state of preservation here, because no rust holes can be detected.
