The Volkswagen Beetle, designed in the late 1930s, realized the vision of an affordable Volkswagen. Series production began after the Second World War. With an air-cooled four-cylinder boxer engine in the rear, the Beetle began with 25 hp and developed into variants with a displacement of up to 1600 cc. The four-cylinder boxer engines were renowned for their reliability, and the Beetle became the best-selling car in the world until the 2000s.

Technik: Konstruktionsmerkmale des Käfers, Heckantrieb durch einen luftgekühlten Vierzylinder-Boxermotor, von der Stromlinienform inspirierte Ganzstahlkarosserie und Zentralrohrrahmen finden sich auch bei anderen Fahrzeugen, die zur gleichen Zeit entwickelt wurden. Die Kotflügel waren mit der Karosserie verschraubt und nicht verschweißt. Keder zwischen Kotflügel und Karosserie verhinderten das Aneinanderscheuern der Teile. Bei der Entwicklung des Volkswagens war eine Gewichtsgrenze vorgegeben. Durch die Entscheidung für einen Heckmotor statt Frontmotor mit Hinterradantrieb kann die Kardanwelle entfallen, und durch die Wahl von Luft- statt Wasserkühlung ließ sich ebenfalls Gewicht einsparen. Mit diesem Motor wurde auch die Serienfertigung des Volkswagens ab 1945 aufgenommen. Bei diesen Boxermotoren sind die Zylinderköpfe paarweise zusammengefasst, die Zylinder selbst lassen sich einzeln demontieren. Die Motoren unterlagen in Folge regelmäßiger Modellpflege (z. B. Ventilteller aus Chrom-Nickel-Legierung, Laufbahnbeschichtung mit erhöhtem Phosphorgehalt, sogenannte Bimetall-Regelkolben mit definierter Wärmeausdehnung usw.). Der Motor war Basis für die frühen Versionen des Porsche 356, er hatte jedoch abweichend Zylinder in Aluminiumlegierung mit verchromter Laufbahn. LG Tom
