Model history

The first pictures and details of the Renault 5 were released on December 10, 1971, followed by the official launch on January 28, 1972. The Renault 5 was designed by Michel Boué, who designed the car in his spare time, outside of his regular duties. When Renault managers learned of Boué's work, they were so impressed with his concept that they immediately approved a formal development program. The R5 was characterized by a steeply raked tailgate. Boué had originally planned to run the rear lights from the bumper to the C-pillar, similar to the later Fiat Punto and Volvo 850 estate models, but in the end the lights remained at conventional height.
