Model history

A model below the mid-size class (E-Class) was a novelty at Mercedes-Benz. The 190 (W201) competed against the BMW 3 Series and was intended to open up a new target group. The small Mercedes-Benz was presented for the first time in 1982 - the 190 was ultimately produced until 1993, and one generation (W202) later the "Baby-Benz" was renamed the C-Class. With almost 1.9 million units sold, the W 201 is one of the most successful models with the three-pointed star. Below the powerful 16-valve variants (2.3-16 and 2.5-16) of the Mercedes-Benz 190E was the so-called 2.6 with an in-line six-cylinder engine, which was available from 1985 to 1992.
