Model history

The Mercedes-Benz W 116, launched in September 1972, marked the beginning of the iconic S-Class. Under the direction of designer Friedrich Geiger, it offered innovations such as ABS and a collision-protected 96-liter fuel tank. The W 116 had a wide range of engines, from the 2.8-liter six-cylinder to the powerful 6.9-liter V8. Production ended in September 1980 to make way for the W 126.
