Model history

The Golf II Country was developed by Volkswagen in the early 1990s as a special off-road version of the Golf II. The vehicle combined the robust all-wheel drive of the Golf Syncro with increased ground clearance, making it suitable for light off-road terrain. The Golf Country was produced in cooperation with Steyr-Daimler-Puch in Austria. Originally presented as a concept vehicle at the Geneva Motor Show, the car was so well received that it went into series production in limited numbers.
