Technik, hier Sicherheit: Spätes Modell W126 mit Airbag, Ledersitzen und Wurzelholz-Innenausstattung. Linkslenker. Bei der Konstruktion kommen hochfeste niedriglegierte Bleche (HSLA) zum Einsatz, um das Gewicht zu reduzieren, ohne die strukturelle Festigkeit und Integrität zu beeinträchtigen. Antiblockiersystem (ABS) (erstmals im Vorgängermodell W116 erhältlich). Es war eine Sonderausstattung für alle Modelle und Motoren bis Ende Dezember 1984, dann wurde es zur Standardausstattung für die V8-Modelle. Das Antiblockiersystem (ABS) wurde im September 1986 zur Standardausstattung für den 260 SE, 300 SE und 300 SEL. Das Antiblockiersystem (ABS) war Standard in den US-Modellen 300 SDL, 350 SD und 350 SDL. Gurtstraffer sorgten dafür, dass alle Sicherheitsgurte (mit Ausnahme des hinteren mittleren Schultergurts bei Limousinen) gestrafft wurden, wenn das Fahrzeug Bedingungen erkannte, die zu einem Unfall führen könnten, wie etwa ein plötzliches, kräftiges Bremsen oder eine plötzliche Verzögerung während des Aufpralls. Knautschzonen vorn und hinten absorbieren Aufprallenergie und verringern so die Verletzungsgefahr der Insassen. Geriffelte Rückleuchten, das Design, das beim R107/C107 erstmals zum Einsatz kam , wurden übernommen. Das geriffelte Design sorgt dafür, dass die Rückleuchten auch dann noch sichtbar bleiben, wenn sich an den Außenkanten Schmutz ansammelt. Airbags Der Fahrerairbag wurde 1981 als kostenpflichtige Option für alle Modelle und Motorisierungen eingeführt. Die Kunden konnten entweder nur den Fahrerairbag oder Fahrer- und Beifahrerairbags wählen. Auf dem US-Markt wurde der Fahrerairbag ab dem Modelljahr 1985 zur Standardausstattung . Ab September 1987 wurde der Beifahrerairbag vorne als kostenpflichtige Option für das Modelljahr 1988 hinzugefügt. Der Beifahrerairbag vorne war bis 1989 eine kostenpflichtige Option, dann wurde er nur für Modelle mit V8-Motoren und 1991 für den Rest der Modellpalette zur Standardausstattung. Traktionskontrollsystem (TCS), auch bekannt als Beschleunigungs-Schlupf-Regelung (ASR), um ein Durchdrehen der Räder zu verhindern (eine Premiere bei Mercedes-Benz). Diese Funktion war nur für europäische Modelle ab 1989 und 1991 und für nordamerikanische Modelle (560 SEL und 560 SEC) nur ab 1991 verfügbar.
