Vehicle description
The rolling strawberry basket – that's what his fans affectionately call it to this day. The open golf. The reason for its nickname was the roll bar, which VW was the first manufacturer to install for occupant protection. Which the customers did not like at first. But they learned to love it, their open golf, built since 1979. By 1993, almost 390,000 vehicles had been produced. One of these strawberry baskets is now for sale.
The fresh air Golf, with the VIN WVWZZZ15ZFK005985, was first approved in Germany in March 1985. So it is not an import vehicle. Just 3 previous owners enjoyed the refreshing wind in this convertible. As far as the seller is aware, the open Wolfsburger was not repainted. The TÜV badge is valid until 08.2023 and there is also an H license plate. Expert opinions or checkbook are not available, as well as a spare key. The Golf is sold with just one key. But he has matching numbers and is, according to information, accident-free. In 2021, there was even an extensive restoration.
The convertible is externally in very good condition, nothing has been modified, tinkered or tuned. The rolling joy giver is his 37 years, hardly to look at. On the pictures, however, we have well documented the minor defects in the blue paint. The Gulf has been largely spared from the typical rust spots. For a better overview, we have also photographed these places in the best possible way. The soft top has been renewed in 2021, as well as the exterior mirrors, all window rubbers, chrome trim and the front & rear bumper (chrome).
Classic BBS wheels are used as rims, the tires, in the dimension 185/60SR14, are still good, according to the seller. The chassis has not been modified but renewed and the brakes are also new, defects are not specified here.
In the passenger compartment of the convertible we find partial leather equipment in grey and blue. The front seats are slightly damaged, according to the seller, and should be upholstered. The rear seat looks very good for this. The rest of the driver's cab is also in very good condition, the door panel, dashboard and radio show no, or hardly any traces of use. In addition, displays for oil temperature, cooling water temperature and engine oil pressure were installed, the latter being not connected. Furthermore, there is a persenning (water-repellent cover to protect the vehicle) and wind deflectors for the strawberry basket.
The speedometer shows 236,651 km, a proud number, but certainly is far from over. The seller indicates all the instruments and displays as functional. Even the digital clock tells us the time without pixel errors. The complete history is not available, but the bills for the restoration and a very good general condition speak for many more years of joy with this convertible.
Under the hood works a 1.8l petrol engine with 90 hp and a 5-speed manual transmission. The last service was in August 2021.
According to the seller, there were no major repairs. But he told us that the carburetor might have to be readjusted. He describes that the speed rises to up to 2,000 rpm after starting, but then drops back to the stationary speed of 850 to 900 rpm after a few minutes. In 2020 there was a new underbody mudguard and in 2021 the already mentioned restoration. From the restoration so far not mentioned in the text: wishbone, dome bearing, end pot, all vacuum hoses, new fuel pump, new gas bubble separator, new spark plugs, new timing belt, carburetor parts renewed, carburetor flange new, oil pan seal and valve cover seal new, clutch new, cavity sealing and all liquids renewed. Now the Golf I Cabriolet is looking for a new owner who opens the soft top on beautiful summer days and enjoys the refreshing wind. So bid diligently and soon drive with this historic classic towards the sunset.
