Vehicle description
When Porsche presented the 911 Targa at the International Motor Show in Frankfurt in autumn 1965, hardly anyone suspected that this model designation would become a fixed, indispensable factor in Porsche history in the future. Until 1967, the rear window of the original version of the Targa was not yet made of safety glass, but of a soft window with a flexible plastic window that could be opened. Only then was a glass pane used. From 1973, the so-called G model was also equipped with the Targa in addition to the classic coupé. By the way: The name Targa was based on the legendary road race "Targa Florio" in Sicily, in which Porsche celebrated great sporting successes at the time.
In this auction, a Porsche 911 Carrera G model Targa from the year of construction 1984 is offered for auction. The Targa with the FIN WP0EB0913ES161465 was first approved by the first owner in the USA, over the years the Zuffenhausen sports car then came to Germany – the seller himself introduced the 911 from North Carolina in 2012. All measures for a successful approval in Germany were then made, now this Targa has German papers. An exact history of the vehicle is not available, so the so-called matching numbers cannot be confirmed – but the seller assumes this. The Targa sometimes does not yet have an H-approval, the TÜV is valid until July 2023, according to the seller.
Following the import of the car to Germany, according to the current owner, the Targa roof was completely restored and many seals renewed. In 2010, a complete repainting of the body in gold color took place in the USA, this Porsche Targa has never suffered an accident, according to the seller's statements. The headlights at the front, like the rear lights, have no cracks, and there is no damage to the bumpers. At the rear, the huge turbo rear wing stands out, which is in very good condition. External modifications deviating from the original condition are not to be found on the exterior, furthermore, no corrosion points on the body can be detected.
Classic and chrome/body colour original Fuchs rims in clean condition adorn the exterior appearance of the Porsche together with tyres of the Good Year brand – which, according to the current owner, still have 70-90% of their new condition. The brakes of this Porsche also have 70-90% of the new condition, in the area of the chassis there are apparently no deficits.
A mixture of the colours black and brown can be found in the interior of this 911 Targa: the 3-spoke sports steering wheel and the original seats of the Porsche were completely re-emptied in 2021, and the rear seats also received a new leather. A few cracks in the brown dashboard are to be mentioned as a defect in the interior, otherwise the interior of this Porsche apparently no damage can be removed. In addition to electric windows, electrically adjustable mirrors and a headlight cleaning system, the 911 is also equipped with a Becker Traffic Pro car radio and larger loudspeakers are installed in the door panels and in the hat rack. The seller mentions that the electric mirror adjustment and the headlight cleaning system do not work, but otherwise all controls are in service without any problems.
A glance at the classic watch collection in the cockpit also shows the mileage: The speedometer shows a mileage of 230,030 kilometers. This Targa has already been converted to German fittings with KM display. According to the seller, the mileage can be partially traced. The available documents include a technical data sheet from Porsche Classic. The instruments must be attested to their indiscriminate function.
In the rear of this G-model Targa works a 3.2-liter engine, which in the US version delivers 207 hp – the boxer engine is coupled to a 5-speed manual transmission. In July 2023, the Porsche underwent a final service, the most recent work being the conversion of the high beam and light horn to relay control.
Rust-free, unwelded, cavity sealed and machined with underbody protection, the underside of the G-model can be discovered. A Targa from Porsche has long been a cult, no matter from which model series. The G model convinces with its classic 911 virtues and the purist and unfiltered handling, in this 911 Targa offered here, the turbo rear wing and the body painted in gold tone cause a sensation. In addition, the rust-free and contrary to the overall mileage to be assumed very good condition of this Porsche 911 convinces.
