Model history

After the introduction of the Porsche Ur-911, the Zuffenhausen-based company quickly realized that the six-cylinder boxer was hardly affordable as an entry-level version for some regular customers and buyers of the Porsche 356. In order not to scare them off, its little brother, the 912, was introduced just eight months after the 911 was launched. It was cheaper and had a four-cylinder engine. As a result, it was significantly lighter than its big brother and was known above all for its good-natured handling. The engine came from the 356 and was carried over into the new Porsche generation with a few modifications. The bodies were not manufactured in Stuttgart but by Karmann in Osnabrück. Porsche produced the sports car, which was available as a Coupé and Targa, from 1965 to 1969. In 1976, the Porsche 912E, based on the G model and exclusive to the US market, appeared.
