Vehicle description
Model History:
The Dodge Series D8 was an upper midsize passenger car from the Chrysler Corporation, introduced with minor modifications as the successor to the Dodge D5 in October 1937 as the 1938 model and built for only one year. The car was powered by a side-controlled 3.6-liter inline six-cylinder engine through a three-speed
manual transmission. The technology was installed almost unchanged until 1954.
General information about the car:
The Dodge Series D8 offered here in the auction is the better equipped 4-door touring sedan with trunk. Built in 1938, its registration in Denmark is documented since 1955. Presumably it came to Scandinavia already as a new vehicle. The car with the VIN 30020027 was imported to Germany more than 20 years ago and then completely restored. About 15 years ago it was registered in Germany. For this, registration certificate part I and II (former vehicle title and registration certificate), data sheet, TÜV full certificate (§21) and H-certificate (§23) had to be issued. These documents are available. Also available are various Danish documents from 1955, as well as contemporary repair manuals and spare parts lists and catalogs. An extensive photo documentation of the restoration and some spare parts invoices complete the history. As the car has been out of service for more than 7 years, TÜV §21 and registration certificate have to be applied for again, but this should not be a problem. In 2010, the Oldi-Tax appraisal certified the car in an exceptionally good overall condition of 1 - 2 and a value of € 25,000, which should be far exceeded today. Since then, the car has covered only 55 kilometers. A service was done last year, the car is ready to drive.
Exterior color/paint/body:
The body was painted in silver and blue during the restoration, which suits the Dodge very well. The quality of the work can be seen even after about 20 years, and so can the care since: no ripples or bubbles, the paint still shines like new and gives the car an elegant look. There are few small scuffs (see photos front and rear left fender and right running board). Except for the front turn signals, which had to be retrofitted for the MOT, the car is original. The chrome parts are in very good condition, no dents, scuffs or rust to be seen. 1938 was the last year the "Dodge Brothers" emblem was installed, as seen so nicely on the trunk lid - very rare.
Exterior Rims/Brakes/Suspension:
Correct Good-Year Radial tires are mounted on the 16-inch steel rims with original chrome hubcaps. The tires are like new, the brakes have been overhauled. The seller is not aware of any defects.
Interior:
The upscale class can be seen especially in the interior. High-quality fabrics and noble materials, Bakelite and chrome. There is a heater installed, which was not a matter of course in the 30s. 4 interior lights, coat hooks, crank and pop-out windows - mostly luxury even in the 50s!
The seats and side panels are upholstered in gray fabric. The carpets are blue, the floor mats again in gray. Upholstery and headliner are without damage, look like new. Lovely.
The large banjo steering wheel feels good in the hand. The "wood" dashboard has an original odometer (very rare, otherwise in miles). The other instrumentation is also lush: gauges for oil pressure, fuel level, water temperature and an ammeter are all worth seeing. According to the seller, everything works, really unusually good condition. What a great atmosphere!
Mileage:
The odometer in the speedometer shows 32,649 km, in 2009 there were 32,459 km. So in 14 years only 190 km were covered. The total mileage is not known.
Thecar has hardly been used since the restoration.
Engine:
The Dodge has a sidedrive inline six cylinder with 3,568 cc (218 cu in) displacement and 87 hp. The engine is reliable, spare parts are easy to get, as the engine was used for more than 20 years until 1954. Shifting is done via a 3-speed manual transmission, which is quite sufficient for the high-torque engine. The technology has been completely overhauled about 20 years ago. Since then, the car has hardly been driven.
Underbody:
According to the seller, the underbody is rust-free. An inspection was done last year. According to the seller, everything is fine, the car runs flawlessly. This is the American dream! Get in and drive away - no - glide away.
